How to join the league page for interested skaters:
Interested skaters are encouraged to read our FAQs page.
If you have already read this page and are ready to make the commitment,
awesome! Here is additional information you may need to know in order to
participate in the boot camp and/or tryout to become a part of our Fort Wayne
Derby Girl family.
What are the basic requirements to be a Fort Wayne Derby
Girl?
What is the boot camp all about?
FWDG offers a roller skating boot camp held at Bell's Roller Rink in New Haven.
IN in the summertime before the FWDG tryout is held. Interested skaters are
strongly encouraged to attend this boot camp to learn and practice basic
skating skills that are necessary for roller derby. Exact dates and times will
be posted on our website when they are confirmed. Boot camp attendees will need
all of the equipment listed above in order to participate. Bell's does offer
rental skates for those who participate in the boot camp.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts are typically held in the summertime before our season begins, and
after the boot camp is held. Exact dates and times for tryouts will be posted
on our website as soon as they are confirmed. In order to attend tryouts, you
must have all of the equipment listed above.
Do I have to be a seasoned skater to tryout?
Not necessarily. It takes a lot more than skating skills in order to be a Fort
Wayne Derby Girl. Although previous skating experience is beneficial, the
coaching staff will also be evaluating skaters on their athletic
potential.
How can I get the equipment that I need?
We encourage those who are interested to purchase their equipment early and
begin to practice skating in them. They can be purchased at most local sports
stores or skate shops. Bikes and Boards is one place where you can purchase you
protective gear. Skates usually have to be ordered either online or at one of
the local skating rinks. Mouth guards can be purchased at almost any local
sports store.
How can I get ready now?
START SKATING NOW—There are lots of rinks in the area such as Bell's Skating
Rink, and Roller Dome North and South. You can check online for times and
locations of open skates. If the weather is nice, you can also practice outside
on any of the local trails or even in your own neighborhood. There is also
recreational league called Down N Derby that you can participate in for
practice.
Down N Derby, what's that?
Down and Derby is a recreational league that hosts one night or derby per month
at Bell's Skating Rink and is open to anyone who wants to participate. The cost
is $5.00, and you will need to bring a white and black tee shirt, and all
required equipment. If you don't feel like you are ready to participate just
yet, you can go to watch as well. Visit HYPERLINK
"http://www.facebook.com/DownNDerbyFW"http://www.facebook.com/DownNDerbyFW for
dates, times, and additional information.
GET IN SHAPE—Being a roller girl is a serious athletic
commitment. It may be a good idea to start eating healthy, drink lots of water,
and exercise regularly.

Will I be put onto a team if I am selected at tryouts?
Teams are selected by the coaching staff after a four month training period and
will be based on skill level and the needs of each team. Skaters may skate for
more than one team and can move from one team to the other at any time during
our season. The coaching staff will select a 14 person roster one week before
each bout. In order to be on the 14 person roster for the Bomb Squad, you must
be one the 20 person charter. The coaching staff will select the Bomb Squad
charter based on skill level and the needs of the team. In order to be eligible
to be rostered for the Bomb Squad or SWAT Team, skaters must have 80% practice
attendance, and be up to date on their dues.
